Periodontal instrument sharpening and shaping can be confusing, cumbersome, time consuming and impractical at chairside – where it is needed the most. Dull and/or misshaped instruments are ineffective and can also cause damage to the root and soft tissues. Whaṯs more, use of dull instruments can contribute to clinician fatigue, discomfort and/or injury.

Discover the time-tested, practical and effective methods for chairside periodontal instrument sharpening and shaping in this exciting and innovative workshop.

NOTE: Clinical experience using periodontal instruments required.

ATTENDEES TO BRING: Loupes & headlamp (if used in practice); Sterilized sharpening stones and any sharpening supplies she/he currently utilizes (e.g., test sticks, oils, etc.); Sampling of a few sterilized periodontal instruments that the workshop attendee wants to practice on. Instrument types can include: curettes, scalers, Kirkland knife, Orban knife, Goldman-Fox knife and/or surgical chisels.

Workshop is limited to 24 attendees.

  • Learn practical methods for clinically evaluating for instrument sharpness and shape
  • Learn how to effectively sharpen and shape periodontal instruments

Dr. George Merijohn

San Francisco periodontist George K. Merijohn practiced 28 years and is Associate Clinical Professor in postdoctoral periodontics at UCSF and U Washington. He is a leading clinician and educator in periodontics and an authority on gingival recession prevention, management, and minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Merijohn authors articles on gingival recession & the evidence-based approach; publishes; consults; lectures internationally; & leads gingival grafting workshops. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Evidence-Based Dental Practice and is the founder and director of the Meadowood Dental Study Club in Napa Valley California.
